Employment of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technicians and installers is projected to grow 21% from 2012 to 2022 based on US Labor statistics. The growing number of sophisticated climate-control systems is expected to increase demand for qualified HVAC technicians. Climate-control systems generally need replacement after 12-15 years. As a result, many homes and commercial buildings that were constructed between 2002 and 2006 will need replacement, further spurring demand for technicians.
Job opportunities for HVAC technicians are expected to be excellent, particularly for those who have completed training at an accredited technical school or through an apprenticeship program. Candidates familiar with computers and electronics, as well as those who have developed troubleshooting skills, will have the best job opportunities as employers continue to have difficulty finding qualified technicians to work on complex new systems.
The median annual wage for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers was $43,640 in May 2012. The top 10% earned more than $68,990. This wage will continue to increase as the demand for excellent trained technicians increases over the next five to seven years according to the US Department of Labor statistics.
